Types of Water Filtration Systems
Reverse Osmosis versus Carbon Filtration

How to decide which is right for you?

Activated Carbon is the most effective filtration technology for improving off tastes and odors sometimes associated with municipal water supplies. The FM 1500-B activated carbon filter used in the Nestlé Waters’ filtration system is very effective at reducing organic impurities, such as mold, algae, and harmful bacteria, like E. Coli. In addition, the multi-phase technology is certified by NSF International for the reduction of Chlorine*, asbestos*, particulates*, protozoan cysts*, and lead*.
* FM 1500-B activated carbon system is manufactured by Cuno Inc., a 3M Company. NSF standards #42 and #53. Not for sale in Iowa. Not for residential use in CA and WI.
Reverse Osmosis is appropriate if your water has a lot of minerals. Also, referred to as “hard water“ or high TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) content.
How do I know if my water has high mineral content?
Indications of high mineral content include: mineral deposits on coffee makers and pots, scale build up on faucets, cloudy ice cubes, and possibly an earthy taste to the water.
How do these filtration systems work?
Carbon Filtration uses activated carbon, made from organic material that has been heat treated with steam to make it extremely porous. The carbon filter technology acts like an organic magnet, trapping solid materials and impurities in the filter matrix. The “pores” (tiny filter passageways) trap contaminants, allowing only treated water to pass through the filter.
Reverse Osmosis filtration is the process of removing purified water from its impurities. Reverse Osmosis reduces up to 99% of unwanted impurities and significantly reduces bad taste and odors for refreshing clean water. Using a semi-permeable membrane to divert dissolved minerals, salts, metals, chemicals, micro-organisms and other impurities to drain, Reverse Osmosis provides all the benefits of Activated Carbon Filtration. Reverse Osmosis also provides the additional ability to reduce dissolved minerals or Total Dissolved Solids (TDS). These dissolved solids are small particles of minerals that cannot be seen with the naked eye. The technology used in the Nestl´ Waters’ Reverse Osmosis System is manufactured by Cuno Inc., a 3M Company and is NSF certified to reduce the following contaminants** from tap water.
Cyst Reduction
Arsenic
Barium
